Every bit of criticism aimed at Paddy Pimblett’s fighting style was evident during UFC 324.
He faced a major step up in competition when he took on Justin Gaethje in the main event, with the interim lightweight title up for grabs.
‘The Highlight’ made history, overcoming his status as a moderate underdog to become the UFC’s first two-time interim champion. After five thrilling rounds, he secured the victory via unanimous decision.
Even though Pimblett showed plenty of toughness and refused to back down, it was another night where some familiar weaknesses became apparent again.

Despite the interim lightweight title bout being praised by much of the fanbase for its non-stop action, Josh Thompson, a respected voice in the sport, went as far as to call it “one of the worst main events”.
Pimblett has faced questions about his approach ever since joining the UFC back in 2021. The main concern has been his striking defence.
That was one of the points former UFC champion Michael Bisping criticised about Pimblett’s performance when reacting to the fight on Saturday night.
He said on UFC on TNT Sports: “I mean, listen, we all know what (Justin Gaethje) is capable of, 14 fights in the UFC, 13 bonuses, he got another one (on Saturday night) so that’s 14, he’s the human highlight reel for a reason.
“But if I’m talking about the fight strategically, I mean, listen, Paddy was great with the heart and everything and he rocked him and the uppercuts were beautiful and he caught him with some shots later on in the rounds as Justin was coming forward.
“But I wish he put his chin down a little bit and brought his hands up a little bit. And I know that’s his style, and he gets away with it, and my word, has he got a chin and I’m impressed so I’m not talking trash.
“But it’s like there could’ve just been a few better defensive things and maybe we’d have had a different result here.”
This weakness in the 31-year-old’s game is a criticism that has followed him throughout his career.

Even though he did not walk away with the interim title, there are still plenty of intriguing matchups waiting for Pimblett in the lightweight division.
One of those could be a high-profile clash with Conor McGregor, who has repeatedly mentioned him by name over the past year.
There is also Dan Hooker, with whom Pimblett shares a long-standing and heated rivalry. Hooker is set to fight next Saturday at UFC 325.
No matter how that bout goes, plenty of fans are keen to finally see him and Hooker face off inside the Octagon.
