Michael Beale has told Thursday’s press conference – as per the Rangers YouTube – that Rangers will need to make three or four big signings in the summer that can instantly improve the starting XI if the Ibrox club are to match Celtic.

Beale watched on last weekend at Hampden Park as his side were beaten by Celtic 2-1 in the League Cup final. But in truth, it could have been a whole lot heavier with Celtic dominating and boasting a number of chances last Sunday.

Criticism has come in the way of the Rangers board after making only two signings in the January window. Many of the signings made in the last couple of seasons have failed, under Ross Wilson’s guidance. Beale says change is needed.

Beale was asked on Thursday – ahead of a home clash against Kilmarnock on Saturday – what he thinks Rangers will need in the summer window to match Celtic. He responded by saying three or four big signings in the starting XI.

“I think we will need to recruit three or four players that can make a massive impact to the team,” Beale said. “We need to sort out the futures of the ones that are there. It may be that we need to change one or two that in contract as well.”

Beale: Rangers need to make three or four big signings to match Celtic

Rangers could do a lot worse than taking a note out of their bitter rivals’ book, when it comes to the transfer market. Celtic have been plucking talent from lesser-known leagues outside of Europe and those additions have been superb.

Reo Hatate, Kyogo Furuhashi – and most-recently, Alistair Johnston – have all starred for the Scottish champions. The Gers, meanwhile, have only made two signings. They remain nine points behind and some way off Celtic. Beale is right.

Changes are needed. A number of players are going to leave this summer with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Jack all out of contract in June – among others. Replacements are needed and improvements on what they have now.
