Michael Beale has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Rangers TV – that Ibrox wonderkid Alex Lowry has the quality to be one of the club’s “leaders” in the future, but has reminded the midfielder he still has lots to improve on.

Lowry, 19, broke into the Rangers team towards the end of last season – having a hand in four goals in seven games. But this season, he suffered a hefty injury and only managed his first outing in the second clash against Ajax.

Now fit, under Beale has been an unused sub in the 3-2 wins over Hibernian and Aberdeen. But there are big things expected of Lowry and unfortunately, he has the likes of Malik Tillman and Scott Arfield ahead in the pecking order.

Beale was asked about Lowry and if he was close to a start on Thursday afternoon, ahead of Friday’s trip to Ross County. He responded by saying he is. While he has things to work on, he could become a leader for the club.

“He’s close to starting. There’s areas of his game that are outstanding for a young player. There are areas of his game I would like to see him improve. I have to pick and choose the right time to use him.

“When he goes in I expect him to stay in. I expect him to be at this club for a long period, and be one of the leaders moving forward. He is the future of Rangers, but only if he deserves it,” Beale said, during Thursday’s press conference.

Beale: Ibrox wonderkid Lowry can become a Rangers leader in the future

Lowry is a wonderful talent but it is all about how he is used at Rangers. Throw him in at the deep end when times are tough, like they are currently, and it could see him get swallowed up. Bringing him in when the team is confident; tick.

The kind of player he is, he needs his attacking teammates to be firing. If they do that, they can bring the best out of him. Beale needs to get his side some momentum. On Friday, there is no reason why he cannot come off the bench.
