Rangers have confirmed that Cedric Itten has completed a permanent exit to Swiss side Young Boys – and both Michael Beale and Borna Barisic were among those to react to his Instagram post on Wednesday.

Itten, 25, has endured a difficult spell at Rangers since joining the club for £3million (Scotsman) in 2020. There was plenty of optimism, after he had netted 36 goals in 63 games for St. Gallen prior to his move.

But the competition of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe proved too much for the Switzerland international. After two years at Rangers, he netted just eight goals in 49 outings – with a loan spell in Germany proving to be a failure.

Now, he has put pen to paper on a move that sees him return to his home country. Young Boys have qualified for the Europa Conference League qualifying round, and Itten has sent a heartfelt message to Rangers fans.

Itten confirms Rangers exit: Beale and Barisic respond

It is a shame for Itten, who clearly had the quality to shine at Rangers. He had the physicality, the goals, the versatility. But competition for places was a stumbling block and it meant he never got any momentum.

Morelos and Roofe are better options up top and with Fashion Sakala also vying for a place in the side, Itten had little other choice after becoming the club’s fourth-best option up top. A move to Young Boys is a good one.

Among those to respond to his Instagram, include ex-Rangers assistant Beale – who is on the verge of leaving Aston Villa to become QPR manager. Borna Barisic and Alex Lowry also wished him well.
