Everton suffered a 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Former Everton defender Michael Ball has slammed Toffees boss Sam Allardyce in his Liverpool Echo column after he compared himself to former managers David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman.
Allardyce watched on as his side suffered a helpless 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City at Goodison Park, scoring a consolation through Yannick Bolasie and boasting just 18 per cent possession.
After the match, Allardyce was quoted by the Liverpool Echo: “You get booed off if you lose here badly. Any manager. Ronald will get booed off, Roberto will get booed off and Moyesy got booed off. You know why? I spoke to them all.”
But Ball, who also turned out for Manchester City during his career, delivered some home truths to Allardyce by reminding the former Newcastle United, West Ham United and Sunderland manager that all three predecessors were sacked.
“Allardyce made the comments after the game about booing and referred to Ronald Koeman and Roberto Martinez, he’s got to remember that they got booed for a reason – and they ended up getting sacked,” Ball said.
“This should be a wake-up call for the boss, he can’t smirk and laugh it off that only a few are booing. The fans will win, they’ll do the talking with their feet.
“That performance at the weekend is unforgivable, and it’s the last thing you need when going into a big game at the weekend.”
Despite harbouring hopes of a European spot during pre-season, Everton have struggled to maintain any kind of consistency despite spending big in the transfer window and remain in ninth place – 11 points adrift of sixth.
Allardyce could win back a huge section of the Everton fanbase this weekend, though, as the Toffees welcome bitter Merseyside rivals Liverpool to Goodison Park in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
