Micah Richards compared Tino Livramento to Thierry Henry for the role he played in Alexander Isak’s goal during Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Playing as a left-back because of injuries, Newcastle’s summer signing ran at PSG’s defence, before dancing with the ball on the edge of the area, laying the ball off to Miguel Almiron, whose left-footed shot was parried by Gianluigi Donnarumma and converted home by Alexander Isak on the rebound.

It was brilliant play all-round by Eddie Howe’s side from Tino Livramento’s sharp run, Lewis Miley’s clever run off the ball to allow Miguel Almiron to cut onto his left foot, and then Alexander Isak’s razor-sharp reactions.

But it was Tino Livramento who Micah Richards wanted to praise as he stated that he was like ‘Thierry Henry at his best’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/11/23 at 8:55 pm).

It was a moment of magic from the youngster, before controversy could strike with the awarding of the penalty – Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry shared their thoughts.

This should have been all three points for the Magpies, with a number of spirited performances, bearing in mind also that Eddie Howe’s side have been hit with a number of injuries.

Tino Livramento like Thierry Henry

“It was brilliant from Newcastle,” said Richards. “Paris had dominated possession, but Newcastle, at times when they go forward, we mention about them putting a lot of men forward.

“This time it’s Livramento getting into a good position. The keeper has to do better here, he parries it straight to Isak.

“But I just want to show the run from Livramento. It’s mazy. It’s like Thierry Henry at his best. One, two and three. Can he find a pass? Of course he can, then Isak puts it away.”

Newcastle in control

If Newcastle had won this game, then European football post-Christmas would have been guaranteed, it was just a case of staying in the Champions League or the Europa League.

Now reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League is out of their hands.

Borussia Dortmund have already qualified and PSG can do so with just a point during the final matchday week, in fact, they don’t even have to win.

But destiny is in Newcastle’s hands in ensuring they can, at the very least, play Europa League football because if they beat AC Milan at St James’ Park, then that box is ticked.
