Micah Richards has claimed that Bruno Guimaraes is ‘something else’ after Newcastle United beat Brentford 5-1 in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park.

The former Premier League defender praised the manner in which Newcastle’s January capture ‘controls the midfield’, as he bagged himself a brace against Thomas Frank’s side.

To think that Newcastle have scored five goals at home, yet star striker Callum Wilson hasn’t got on the scoresheet, says a lot about how far they are progressing under Eddie Howe.

Guimaraes has played a huge role in that and the 24-year-old is only growing following his winter transfer to the North East side.

The Magpies were all over error-prone Brentford yesterday and they are now sitting fifth in the Premier League table – a stark difference from when they were winless at this stage last season.

Nonetheless, one man that has caught the eye is Newcastle’s new midfield hero and Richards was quick to big up the player, as he told BBC Sport.

“Guimaraes is something else,” said Richards. “The way he controls the midfield. Brentford were dangerous on the attack, at times.

“But Newcastle have a new-found of confidence whenever they go forward, they look like they will score. They are working really well as a team – overall, St James’ Park was rocking.”

EUROPE CALLING FOR NEWCASTLE?

Europe and silverware is the name of the game for Newcastle United under this Saudi-led ownership and with Eddie Howe in the dugout.

Well, at this moment in time, they are on track to secure European football and possibly even dream bigger.

Whilst those from the outside are expecting more from Newcastle this season, and they are delivering, others are still expected to finish ahead of them in the race for Europe this term.

That lack of pressure perhaps helps the club to try and secure a European finish because this has been quite a start for the club.
