Micah Richards has written in The Daily Mail that he was expecting “great things” from Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this season.

The former Manchester City and Aston Villa right-back seems to rate Gomez highly and was expecting a big season from him.

However, the England international picked up a knee injury while training with England in November 2020 and is unlikely to play again this season, according to Sky Sports.

Richards made the comment while analysing Liverpool’s injury problems ahead of their Premier League game against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Englishman wrote in The Daily Mail: “It is a shame that Liverpool have not been able to call upon some of their biggest names to help defend their crown.

“Without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez – a player who I anticipated great things of this year – Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Sadio Mane, Fabinho and Alisson Becker at times, the odds have stacked up.”

Disappointment for Joe Gomez

Gomez is not at the level of fellow Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk – who is also injured at the moment – but the 23-year-old – who cost the Reds £3.5 million in transfer fee when they signed him from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015, as reported by BBC Sport – has been progressing well.

According to WhoScored, the 23-year-old made 22 starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League and made five starts and two substitute appearances in the Champions League for the Reds last season.

Missing most of the campaign will be a massive blow to Gomez, but hopefully for him, the Liverpool fans and manager Jurgen Klopp, he will be back stronger next season.
