Micah Richards has paid tribute to former Aston Villa team-mate Adama Traore.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers winger made headlines earlier this month by scoring twice in a shock 2-0 win away to Premier League champions Manchester City.

Traore, sold by former Aston Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo in 2016, had plenty of potential but consistency stifled him in a big way.

That was also the story of his Middlesbrough spell for the most part, but the former Barcelona winger looks to be enjoying his football at Wolves.

And Richards, speaking to BBC Sport, has offered his thoughts on the jet-heeled Spanish attacker – and particularly the time he embarrassed him in training.

“I played with Adama Traore at Aston Villa and he was amazing. I tried to race him one time – I thought I was a quick defender – and he gave me about ten yards. Rookie error!

“It’s nice to see things paying off for him. He has been written off a few times and now he can go on and enjoy his football.”

Traore started this afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Southampton at Molineux, but could not influence the game as he would have liked.

The 23-year-old made 20 appearances for Aston Villa during the 2015-16 season, but didn’t score.
