Newcastle United’s season has started off in the worst possible manner with no points yet recorded by Steve Bruce’s side.

Micah Richards has claimed that Steve Bruce might just take ‘confidence’ from the fact that Newcastle United scored during their 3-1 defeat against Norwich on Saturday.

The Magpies were well beaten by the newly-promoted side, with Teemu Pukki proving to be the man of the moment for Daniel Farke’s side, as he netted a hat-trick on the day.

It was a dominant performance from Norwich, with Jonjo Shelvey netting a stoppage-time goal, but that didn’t paper over the cracks in terms of how Bruce’s side performed.

Speaking to Final Score on BBC One (17/08/2019 5:15 pm), former right-back Richards, who worked under Bruce at Aston Villa, stated that it was a ‘strange’ performance from the Magpies.

“It was strange really,” Richards told Final Score. “It wasn’t a typical Steve Bruce performance. He normally sets up with a structure of ‘you [the oppositin] shall not pass’.

“But Norwich could have scored five, six or seven. So, he will be very, very disappointed with the way the team played. He might take some confidence that they got a goal, maybe a positive to take into next week, but for a player who has played under Bruce, he’d very disappointed.”

Newcastle’s winless start, and poor performances, added with everything that went on in the summer, will be concerning for the supporters.

If the Magpies continue producing these same type of displays then it will be a very difficult season for the club, but at this stage, it’s all about getting points on the board.

At the weekend, Bruce will have to prepare his team for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur, who have picked up four points from their opening two matches.
