Pundit Micah Richards has told the Daily Mail that he wants to see Liverpool defender Joe Gomez become a leader this season.

The Reds enter the campaign as Premier League champions, and will be looking to defend their crown.

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t been busy in the transfer market, with Olympiacos left back Kostas Tsimikas the only arrival this summer.

Liverpool may yet dip into the market again, but it currently looks like they will go into the season with the side that has served them so well in recent years.

Pundit Richards has been now been trying to pick out his ‘one to watch’ for Liverpool this summer, and has gone with centre back Gomez.

The 23-year-old has pushed himself clear of Joel Matip as Virgil van Dijk’s partner in the Liverpool defence, and he is now a key player for England too.

Richards believes that Gomez has ‘so much more’ in the locker, and wants to see him become a leader this season because he knows he can do it.

“It’s so hard to pick out the key players from the champions, as they have got world-class players from front to back,” said Richards. “So I’m nominating Gomez as my one to watch as I believe he’s got so much more in his locker.”

“He is England’s best central defender — without a shadow of a doubt — and I want to see him become a real leader this season. I know he can do it,” he added.

If Gomez takes a step forward, Liverpool’s already outstanding defence could become even better – and it will be up to Klopp to get even more out of the former Charlton Athletic talent.
