Mexico’s friendly against Iceland is still set to go ahead as planned despite a recent surge in cartel violence across the country.
Violence broke out in the state of Jalisco over the weekend, leading to unrest and heightened security operations in several areas. The situation has raised concerns about the impact on upcoming sporting events.
While some domestic matches were postponed, attention has now turned to whether international fixtures will also be affected. For now, the Iceland friendly remains on the calendar.
Mexico expected to play Iceland as scheduled in Queretaro
Mexico is preparing to host Iceland on Wednesday at the Corregidora Stadium in Queretaro. The match came under review after violence spread through parts of the country, but there has been no official confirmation of a cancellation.
Several domestic league games were called off over the weekend, including the Liga MX clash between Queretaro and Juarez FC, as well as Chivas vs America in the women’s league.
Despite those disruptions, Mexico’s national team held its training session in Queretaro as planned on Monday.
Sources have indicated that the match is still expected to go ahead, with preparations continuing under the existing schedule.
FIFA monitoring security situation ahead of World Cup
The unrest has prompted FIFA to request detailed reports from Mexico regarding the security situation, particularly in Jalisco. Guadalajara is scheduled to host four matches during the 2026 World Cup in June.
Monterrey and Guadalajara are also set to stage FIFA interconfederation playoff matches in March that will determine two of the remaining participants at the tournament.
Internal documents summarising recent events were sent from FIFA Mexico to the headquarters in Zurich so the governing body can evaluate whether any security adjustments are required.
Mexico is due to host 13 matches during the 2026 World Cup, including knockout fixtures in Mexico City and Monterrey.
At present, there are no indications that the country’s ability to stage the tournament or the upcoming playoff matches is considered at risk.
