Rangers are reportedly keen on Rennes defender Mexer.
According to STV, Rangers have offered a contract to Rennes defender Mexer as they attempt to finalise a deal to lure him to Ibrox.
The Gers need defensive reinforcements this summer, as both out-of-contract Gareth McAuley and Nottingham Forest loanee Joe Worrall will be leaving in a matter of weeks.
Last week, French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was spotted in France for a meeting with Rennes defender Mexer, in the hope of bringing him to Glasgow.
Photos emerged of the pair together on Monday, and STV now report that Mexer has been offered a contract to join Rangers on a free transfer.
The 30-year-old Mozambique international is a free agent in a matter of weeks, and could now be heading to Rangers to bolster Gerrard’s back line at Ibrox after five years in France.
That would be Rangers’ fourth free transfer of the summer alongside Steven Davis, Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, whilst the Daily Record note that Greg Stewart is also heading to Rangers on a free.
It seems that Rangers are building up their squad with clever free agents, and with key positions being attacked early with bargain deals, it will leave fans wondering what’s to come.
Rangers won’t have spent a penny in transfer fees on these five players, potentially freeing up some cash to make a couple of huge signings to really take down Celtic.
That’s the kind of squad building Rangers need to take on Celtic, and money may well be spent on a creative midfielder, another striker and a left back, with so many holes being filed by freebies.
