Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Monday night.
Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has told Sky Sports that he is happy to have leapfrogged rivals Tottenham Hotspur (01/04, 10pm) after beating Newcastle United.
The Gunners were back in action again on Monday night, hosting Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium just over 24 hours after Tottenham’s heartbreaking loss at Liverpool.
It was patchy in places from Arsenal, but they went ahead through Aaron Ramsey in the first half, and then saw Alexandre Lacazette wrap up the win late on, making it 2-0.
Unai Emery picked up a tenth home win in a row with that victory, and it means Arsenal are now in the top four – and even above Tottenham.
Arsenal have moved onto 63 points, two points ahead of Tottenham, and may now have real hopes of finishing above their bitter rivals.
In the last two seasons, the Gunners have had to watch on as Spurs have finished above them, but Tottenham’s dismal run of form means Arsenal have a real shot at breaking the run.
After the game, playmaker Ozil spoke about the win, and admitted that he is happy to have moved above Tottenham, almost laughing at the rivalry between the two clubs whilst acknowledging the fierce competition in North London.
“Our aim is to get to the top four so of course we are happy we are in front of Tottenham,” said Ozil. “It is always competition with them but if we play like we play today, we want to win and take all the points to get top four by the end of the season,” he added.
