Jamie Redknapp has compared Will Hughes to Mesut Ozil.

Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Derby County have the Championship’s answer to Mesut Ozil in Will Hughes.

Derby enjoyed a superb win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, with Tom Ince scoring twice and Darren Bent once in a 3-2 victory at Molineux.

Whilst goalscorers Ince and Bent grabbed the headlines having found the back of the net, but midfielder Will Hughes caught the eye as well.

The 21-year-old has come up through the ranks at Derby, and has long been tipped to become a Premier League star ever since Hughes broke into the Rams side during the 2011/12 season.

An England Under-21 regular with 17 caps to his name, Hughes lost most of last season with a major knee ligament injury sustained on the opening day of the campaign.

Hughes is back to full fitness now, and starred against Wolves, notching an assist in the process as he earned major plaudits from pundit Jamie Redknapp.

Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that Hughes caught his eye during Derby’s win over Wolves, and even compared the playmaker to Arsenal hero Mesut Ozil, suggesting that Hughes is the Ozil of the Championship.

Redknapp thinks that Premier League clubs will be looking to sign Hughes, but challenged him to show that he has the physicality to step up to the Premier League.

“One player who caught my eye outside the top flight over the weekend was Derby midfielder Will Hughes,” said Redknapp. “He is the Mesut Ozil of the Championship and was brilliant in Derby’s 3-2 win at Wolves. He is a great talent — very easy on the eye with a fantastic range of passing — and Premier League scouts must be watching him every week.”

“Hughes is looking back to his best after a cruciate ligament injury which saw him miss most of last season. The challenge now for the 21-year-old is to grab his chance and show that he has the physicality to make the step up to the top flight,” he added.
