Paul Merson thinks Brendan Rodgers is ready to leave Celtic and should replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
Paul Merson says he would be “shocked” if Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was not named the next boss at Arsenal.
Speculation continues about Arsene Wenger’s future at the Emirates Stadium with the Frenchman admitting the Gunners were out of the race for the top four following the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.
That was their fourth loss in a row in all competitions, although they have since beaten AC Milan in the Europa League last-16 and Watford in the league and after that Seagulls result Wenger insisted he was “still the right man for the job” – as outlined by the Guardian.
Yet if the 68-year-old does end his 22-year stay at the North London club this summer then club legend Merson thinks that Rodgers is the ideal successor.
“I don’t know why he doesn’t get the Arsenal job, he never really gets a mention. I think he fits Arsenal great,” the former midfielder told Sky Sports.
“The nearest Liverpool have ever come to winning the league for a long, long time was when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. He’s done nothing wrong at Celtic.
“I think he needs a change and needs to come back down. I’d be shocked if he didn’t get a big job and I’d be quite shocked if he didn’t get the Arsenal job.”
Rodgers took charge at Parkhead in the summer of 2016 and guided the Bhoys to a domestic treble of Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup that first season, as well as going on a 69-game unbeaten run.
Having already won the latter again this term the Hoops are on to repeat that feat with a nine-point lead in the league and facing rivals Rangers in the semi-finals of the cup.
