Merson says Tottenham’s title chase will be over if they lose to Liverpool.

Paul Merson has told SkySports that he believes Tottenham Hotspur simply have to avoid defeat against Liverpool this weekend and will be looking over their shoulders if they fail to do so.

Spurs have a poor recent record at Anfield but will fancy themselves ahead of this encounter with Jurgen Klopp’s out of form side failing to win a game in 2017.

Merson is predicting a 1-1 draw, and offered a warning to Tottenham.

He said: “A Tottenham defeat would more or less hand the title to Chelsea but could put Spurs’ own aspirations at risk.

“If they lose and the other teams win, all of a sudden they’re in a battle for the top four. It can change that quickly. Liverpool have to win and Tottenham have to make sure they don’t lose.”

Liverpool have fallen off the pace in the Premier League and are out of the top four.

A win for the Reds would though put them just one point behind Tottenham, and this is a pivotal game in their season.

Tottenham can put real distance between the two teams by recording an impressive away victory, but their hopes of reaching league leaders Chelsea remain slim.

The Blues have a nine point lead already, but with Chelsea playing on Sunday, Tottenham have a chance to close the gap to six points ahead of Antonio Conte’s side’s visit to Burnley.
