Arsenal signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day.
Paul Merson was a guest on Sky Sports’ The Debate programme last night, and explained why Arsenal signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could spell the end of Arsene Wenger’s tenure at the Emirates.
The Gunners completed the signing of the Gabon international from Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £60 million, and he made an instant impact for his new club, scoring on his debut during his side’s 5-1 win over Everton on Saturday.
The 28-year-old is considered to be one of the continent’s most feared front-men, having scored 101 goals in 120 appearances in all competitions since the start pf the 2015/16 season.
He will surely bring so much to Arsenal’s attacking play, what with his blistering pace, power and lethal finishing ability.
Merson, though, believes that the signing of Aubameyang could prove to be Wenger’s last throw of the dice.
The former Arsenal star was a guest on The Debate last night, and explained why the Frenchman could walk at the end of the season:
“These don’t seem like Arsene Wenger signings to me. When has he ever bought a 29-year-old for £60m with no sell-on clause? Never ever. Sir Alex Ferguson did it a few years ago. He said he needed to win the league and he got Robin van Persie to score him the goals to get above Manchester City. There was no sell-on, he got him to win the league, then he planned to retire. The Aubameyang signing says to me, ‘this is a top-four signing then see you later.'”
The Gunners still have their work cut-out, if they are to force their way back inside the top four this season, with five points currently separating themselves with fourth placed Chelsea, and a win away at Spurs tomorrow will surely be a necessity, if Wenger”s side are to finish inside the Champions League spots this season.
