Tottenham are reportedly eyeing Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers as a potential replacement for Antonio Conte – a manager that Paul Merson once claimed has done a better job in the Premier League than Mauricio Pochettino.

Rodgers, 50, is considered one of the best British managers in Premier League history. Starring at Swansea, he was given the job at Liverpool, almost winning the Premier League. A very successful Celtic stint saw Leicester come in.

Although Leicester went through a difficult patch earlier in the season – largely due to the Foxes being unable to spend and replace the likes of Kasper Schmeichel – Rodgers is still pushing his side away from a relegation battle.

An FA Cup winner with Leicester, and boasting seven honours at Celtic including two League titles – Rodgers has a glittering CV good enough for a club like Spurs. TalkSPORT claim he is being considered to replace Conte at Spurs.

With Leicester lacking any readily available funds for the transfer market, Rodgers might be tempted by a move to Spurs. Merson told Sky Sports in 2022 that Rodgers has done a better job than Pochettino in the Premier League.

“He [Pochettino] took Tottenham as far as he could, and then you’ve got someone like Rodgers who has done a far better job than what Pochettino did. He only lost the league because of a slip. Now, he doesn’t even get a mention.”

There are plenty of managers being linked with the Spurs job. As things stand, Conte looks set to go after two Cup exits in a week – losing to Sheffield United, and then Milan over two legs. Fans are disillusioned, a change is needed.

Pochettino is obviously the favourite. But it would be Spurs admitting a previous mistake and it might end up in the same way. Other names include Thomas Tuchel, Luis Enrique, Marco Silva, Thomas Frank and even Steve Cooper.

Rodgers, though, boasts more Premier League experience than any of the above – other than Pochettino. It would be a smart move by Spurs to bring the Northern Irishman to London, and would help a deal for James Maddison.
