Paul Merson thinks Jarrod Bowen would be a good signing for Liverpool this summer – comparing the West Ham man to James Milner in his SportsKeeda column. Bowen has been long admired by Liverpool.

Bowen, 25, has been in sensational form over the past 12 months. For West Ham, he had a hand in 31 goals during 51 appearances during 2021-22 – scoring 18 goals and laying on 13 assists. Now, he is an England international.

Reports claim Newcastle have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Bowen. The Reds could move for the Hammers ace, with Sadio Mane potentially joining Divock Origi in leaving. Darwin Nunez might be on his way to Anfield.

Speaking in an end-of-the-season column, Arsenal icon Merson shares why Bowen’s work rate reminds him of current Liverpool star Milner – and explains why he would be a good signing for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“He reminds me of a forward version of James Milner – reliable, honest and works his socks off for the team. He’s been linked with a move to Liverpool,” Merson said, on £22m (Guardian) West Ham signing Bowen.

“I think he’d be a great squad player for them. He won’t go in there and take someone’s spot immediately, but Liverpool play a lot of games and their brand of football is intense, so he’ll have plenty of game time under his belt.”

Merson: Bowen a good signing for Liverpool

Liverpool are likely to sell Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich this summer, and it looks increasingly likely that Benfica’s Nunez will come in to replace him. But do Liverpool need another forward?

The Reds will be left with strikers Nunez, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. Mo Salah as an option on the right, Luis Diaz on the left. Fringe players such as Takumi Minamino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are likely to go.

Jota and Nunez can play out wide but they are most-effective up top. So, there is space out wide, especially with Firmino and Salah out of contract next summer. Bowen would get plenty of game time, even if not first choice.
