The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Bale would be a good signing for Tottenham.
However, Merson has said that he is surprised that the Wales international cannot find a club such as Bayern Munich or Juventus and has to come back to Tottenham.
The 31-year-old joined Madrid from Spurs in the summer of 2013, and, according to Sky Sports, he is in London now and will complete a loan move to Jose Mourinho’s side.
Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “I think they are a long way short of that even with Gareth Bale – who is an amazing signing for them.
“It’s a real ‘Wow Moment’ for me. I’m completely and utterly shocked because he is a special player leaving a special club in Real Madrid. He’s not getting a move to a club like Bayern Munich or Juventus any more. Those days are gone.
“But things have obviously changed for Bale in Madrid. He’s running out of time to finish his career somewhere he can enjoy playing his football.”
Big signing for Tottenham Hotspur
Bale knows Tottenham inside out, and although he has won trophies at Madrid, he was at his best when he was at Spurs.
Once the winger gets back to full match fitness, he will be massive for Spurs and will be a huge danger for the opposition defence.
Tottenham are a big and ambitious club, and it is not really a surprise that Bale is set to return to the North London outfit.
