Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, August 20, 2016) that Tottenham Hotspur should make a move for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku before the end of the summer transfer window.
While discussing the potential clubs that the Belgium international could move to this month, Merson asked whether Spurs need the 23-year-old.
“Will Tottenham buy him?” said Merson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, August 20, 2016). “I don’t think they are majorly strong upfront.”
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku
Harry Kane is the first-choice striker at Tottenham at the moment, while summer signing Vincent Janssen is either going to play with him or come on as a substitute in most matches.
For Spurs to successfully compete in the Premier League, the Champions League and in the domestic cup competitions this season, they do need another striker.
Perhaps Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino could promote someone from the youth academy, but Merson’s suggestion about Lukaku is not a bad one.
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku in action
The former Chelsea striker is a very promising and talented player, and the 23-year-old has proven himself in the Premier League.
The problem is that Everton manager Ronald Koeman stated on Saturday evening that Lukaku has said that he will remain at Goodison Park this season.
“He spoke to me yesterday morning [to say] that he made the decision by himself to stay at least one more season at Everton and that is great news for everybody,” ESPN quotes the Dutchman as saying after the Toffees’ 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion away from home at The Hawthorns in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Lukaku seems set to stay at Everton this season, but Tottenham should monitor him and perhaps should make a move for the former Chelsea striker next summer.
