Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur are in the hunt for the Premier League title, but he still can’t see past Liverpool.

Liverpool currently sit in third place in the top flight, and they have shown more vulnerability this season than they have during recent years.

The Reds’ are sufferingly badly with injuries currently, with Thiago, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold all sidelined.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side are still well placed in the table, and while Merson does think Tottenham could trouble the upper echelons of the league, the Sky pundit has backed Liverpool to defend their crown.

“Fans will moan that it was only 1-0 [against West Brom, but Mourinho won’t care, and that comes with experience,” Merson said.

“But now, with Kane on fire and the other attacking players they’ve got at their disposal, they’ve got a chance. A real chance, but, for me, I just can’t see past Liverpool.”

Merson said going into the campaign that Tottenham would be an ‘also-ran’ this year, as Football London reported.

However, it seems that his opinion has now changed and he does feel that Tottenham could challenge.

That is testament to how well Jose Mourinho’s side have started, with their performances earning them a great deal of plaudits.

Tottenham are next in action after the international break when they take on Manchester City, while Liverpool face Leicester City.
