Spurs headed into the Premier League game against the Hammers at the London Stadium last Friday evening high on confidence and as favourites.
A win against Slaven Bilic’s will have closed the gap between Spurs and league leaders Chelsea to just a point, and all the pressure will have been on the Blues to win their game against Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham, though, failed to win. Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 1-0, thanks to Manuel Lanzini’s goal in the 65th minute.
The North London outfit failed to play the way they usually have this season, while the West Ham players stepped up their game.
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has suggested that Tottenham manager Pochettino made a mistake in not including Mousa Dembele in the starting lineup against the Hammers.
The 29-year-old Belgium international midfielder came on as a substitute for defender Jan Vertonghen midway through the second half.
“I think he got it wrong with the Dembele one,” said Merson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, May 6, 2017).
“I think Dembele has to play. He is the kind of player that when someone goes and closes him down, he is still comfortable on the ball.”
