Merson makes hilarious Newcastle takeover claim + Stelling reacts to ‘big six’ conspiracy

Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (01/05/21 at 1:30 pm) that Newcastle’s potential takeover is taking longer than the ‘sofa sale that’s going to end on Bank Holiday Monday’.

Whilst Sky presenter, Jeff Stelling, reacted to potential theories that the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ played a part in blocking Newcastle’s takeover from going through.

Newcastle have been up for sale for a long while, with the UK Government having to deny they were involved ‘at any point’ in a Saudi-based group failing to buy the club from Mike Ashley, as reported by BBC Sport.

Nonetheless, this is what Soccer Saturday host, Stelling, and fellow pundit, Merson, had to say about Newcastle’s takeover.

“Who knows if by then (the summer) or by ever that the takeover might be completed because that still rumbles on,” said Stelling.

Merson responded: “That’s going on longer than that sofa sale that’s going to end on Bank Holiday Monday. Oh my God.”

Stelling then joked: “And I have been going to that sale since I was a boy.”

Merson laughed and responded: “Exactly, exactly. How many bank holidays are there? Seriously. That’s how long this takeover has been going on.”

Stelling then made a claim about Newcastle’s potential takeover: “This is the public investment fund of Saudi Arabia, who were effectively blocked – A lot of the fans believe, and I don’t know whether this is a Machiavellian plot, but the big six could have played a part in having this blocked because they don’t want to see Newcastle as another rival.

“And maybe what happened with the European Super League with those six, it’s not so daft. Who knows.”

Whilst Newcastle still need to make sure, it does seem as though they will spend another season in England’s top-flight, so the value of the club is still intact.

But it will be interesting to see what moves are exactly made in the summer in regards to selling the club.

In truth, fans just want a clearout from top to bottom and that will only happen if a new group of people are allowed to come into the club, so they can push forward.
