Paul Merson told Sky Sports that Man City need to sign a ‘big name’ star like Tottenham forward Harry Kane after he was left ‘shocked’ by the Sergio Aguero news.

The outspoken TV pundit thinks if someone like Tottenham’s sought-after hitman replaces Aguero then they will have the ‘dream job’.

Other names have been mentioned, such as Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland to replace one of the Premier League greats.

But Tottenham fans won’t like Merson backing Kane to make the switch from North London to Manchester in the summer.

“They must be bringing in a big name like an Erling Haaland, a Harry Kane or a Kylian Mbappe,” said Merson. “Otherwise, how do you not keep hold of Aguero? It’s impossible not to keep him. He’s a goal machine!

“I can understand that the injuries he’s picked up over the last couple of seasons have played a part, but if you are not bringing in Haaland, Kane or Mbappe, you keep Aguero. Even if he just plays 20 games, he’s getting you 15 goals.

“If I was Man City, I’d take any one of Haaland, Kane or Mbappe. Whoever gets the chance to replace Aguero at City, they’ve got the dream job. If you are one of those three players, and you get the job at City, you’ve got to be thinking 30 goals next season, at least.

“People will say about Robert Lewandowski and he’s top player, but he’s not coming over to England at this stage of his career. Any one of Haaland, Kane or Mbappe tick the boxes for City, in my opinion. It’s a great move for any of them because they are getting goals.”

Tottenham fans will be dreading the worst once the summer transfer window re-opens because they will fear losing their star man.

It will be interesting if Jose Mourinho can guide Spurs to League Cup success and whether that will persuade Kane to stay on and start the road to trophy success in North London.

Kane’s ultimate dream is to lift trophy after trophy in a Spurs shirt and if they can get over that first finishing line then, perhaps, getting over the others will be easier.
