Paul Merson has claimed that Daniel Levy can be at Tottenham ‘as long as he wants’, as he told Sky Sports (02/11/21 at 7:15 pm)

The former title-winner also controversially claimed that Levy has ‘not let the club down’ after Tottenham appointed Antonio Conte as manager on Tuesday.

At the second time of asking, Spurs managed to secure Conte’s coaching talents and they will now be hoping to get back on track.

Things were just going from bad to worse under Nuno Espirito Santo and the reaction from the Spurs fans, during their defeat to Manchester United, spoke volumes.

But Merson thinks Levy’s job in North London is as safe as he wants it to be, as he claimed that he has never let the club down.

“Daniel Levy will be there as long as he wants to be there,” said Merson. “You have got to think where Tottenham were.

“It weren’t too long ago that we thought that they could win the league and were in the Champions League final. They are playing in one of the best stadiums in the world, if not the best.

“The club has moved on, it has. He’s not let that club down, hardly ever. Conte was a no-brainer. Pochettino was a no-brainer.

“Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. The Pochettino that was the one that hurt them.”

There will be some Tottenham fans out there who feel that Levy has let them down on occasions, including during this past year.

Some would feel that the Spurs chairman needs to take responsibility for how they declined since being in the Champions League final.

Then there was the infamous move to try and enter the European Super League, sacking Jose Mourinho days before a League Cup final and then taking an age to bring in Nuno.

Given that they sacked him after only a few months, just goes to show where he ranked on their wishlist when they brought him in.

Either way, Levy has had his good moments as Spurs chairman, but the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino has resulted in a chain of events that just haven’t gone down well.
