Paul Merson has encouraged Arsenal to go and sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Arsenal are looking like serious candidates to secure a top-four Premier League finish this season, with the 2-1 victory over Brentford this afternoon putting them one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United with two games in hand.

However, creativity issues continue to burden the Gunners who, before today, had only netted twice in all competitions since Boxing Day.

In addition to that, Mikel Arteta’s outfit don’t score a lot of goals from midfield, with Martin Odegaard, their most advanced midfielder, only managing four in 25 appearances across all competitions.

And Merson has written in The Daily Star that his former club should go and sign the Southampton star, who has six goals and seven assists this season.

He said: “Go and get Ward-Prowse for the midfield. Don’t spend it on the stadium. What a waste. Seriously.”

Merson’s comments come in light of speculation that Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke is planning on giving the Emirates Stadium a mega-money refurbishment.

And honestly, the Sky Sports pundit is spot on.

Ward-Prowse is absolutely brilliant and you need only ask Juan Mata, who claimed on Twitter only yesterday that he’s the best free-kick specialist in world football.

The North Londoners absolutely do need more goals from other areas of the pitch, particularly with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having had his contract terminated.

That decision puts pressure on other Arsenal players to step up and maybe, just maybe, a proven goalscorer like Ward-Prowse this summer would make sense.
