The Tottenham Hotspur winger could have major competition from January onwards.

If rumours are believed, Tottenham Hotspur could be sniffing around a certain Memphis Depay in January.

According to The Mirror, Spurs are readying a £50 million bid for the Manchester United flop.

Yes, he failed at Old Trafford, but the now-Lyon winger has developed and matured in a big way since leaving England.

The 25-year-old has managed seven goals and one assist in 10 Ligue 1 outings this season, and has netted four times from as many games in the Champions League. Last season, he finished up with 12 goals and 16 assists from all competitions.

Debate will rage as to whether he’s worth £50 million, but what isn’t as contentious is the idea that he’d be a quality upgrade on Erik Lamela on Tottenham’s left-hand side of attack.

The Argentine winger has been treading water in North London for some time. He is a squad player and one with 16 goals and 23 assists in 138 Premier League outings.

It’s likely that Lamela isn’t doing enough to justify his place at a team who reached the Champions League final in June and what a major upgrade Depay would be.

He is clearly much more of a goal threat than the former Roma star, but can he keep up with the physical efforts that Mauricio Pochettino demands of his players? Lamela can, and that’s why he has survived for so long in North London, but tireless pressing isn’t enough.

The Lilywhites aren’t lacking in runners. Tottenham, who have won three league games all season, are lacking in match-winning options off the bench, game-changers.

And Depay is much more likely to win a game for Pochettino than somebody who averages three league goals a season.
