Newcastle United’s covid situation has reportedly become a lot worse.

The Magpies asked for tonight’s clash with Everton to be postponed after a number of players returned positive tests.

But according to Newcastle-based journalist Craig Hope of The Daily Mail, even more of Eddie Howe’s squad have been confirmed as contracting the virus at Benton.

Consequently, Newcastle are set to ask for Sunday’s clash with Southampton to be postponed.

And here’s how some fans of the North-East club reacted to the rumour on Twitter:

Newcastle are only two points adrift of safety, having played 19 Premier League games so far this season.

But their situation isn’t as optimistic as it seems on the surface.

That’s because Watford, the team they’re chasing in 17th, have two matches in hand.

Hell, even Burnley, who are above 19th-placed Newcastle on goal difference, have no fewer than four Premier League outings in hand over the St James’s Park club.

This break suits Newcastle down to the ground right now and Howe won’t want any fixture to go ahead unless he has as many options available as possible.

The North-East side could still stay in the Premier League, though it’ll hinge on their business throughout January.
