Former Wolverhampton Wanderers player Mel Eves says that he was relieved to see Aston Villa recovering from a poor start against Leeds United to claim a point at Elland Road on Friday.

Leeds were dominant in the first half and took a deserved lead through Pontus Jansson. However, despite all their dominance, they could not muster more than one shot on target in the entire match.

In the second half, Villa got the equalizer through substitute Henri Lansbury. Eves said that Villa were fortunate not to be more than a goal down at the break.

Eves was particularly pleased with the double substitution – Jack Grealish and Lansbury – made by Bruce that paid off eventually.

Both the players made significant contributions in the match, and Eves believes that the duo will have bigger roles to play as the season progresses.

He adds that along with Grealish, Lansbury will give Bruce real options to improve the creativity of the side.

“It was encouraging to see the double substitution of Jack Grealish and Henri Lansbury pay off, with both of them making telling contributions,” wrote Eves in his column for the Sunday Mercury (printed edition; 03/12/2017 – page 49).

Lansbury scored his first goal since arriving from Nottingham Forest in January, and along with Grealish, he gives Bruce real options to improve the creativity of the side going forward.

Villa are fifth in the Championship table with 36 points, eight points behind league leaders Wolves.
