According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers are tracking Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay with the intention of signing him on loan in January, and that could be the ideal time to bring the 20-year-old to Ibrox.

The Manchester United midfielder has been given chances this season, getting chances in the EFL Cup and the Champions League but, when the competitions reach another level in the second half of the campaign, McTominay is likely to be overlooked in favour of his more experienced teammates.

The youngster should get more chances to impress with United all but sure of a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, meaning the final group game against CSKA Moscow could be a dead rubber.

There is also a chance McTominay could feature in the third round of the FA Cup, which kicks off on 6 January, but from then on he would be wise to move elsewhere in order to play regularly and develop his own game.

Rangers already have some impressive midfielders on their books but it seems they are aiming to further strengthen that area of the field in a bid to cut the gap on league leaders Celtic between now and May.

Their latest loan target would certainly be a fine acquisition and United are far more likely to let him go when they have a clean bill of health and the early rounds of their respective competitions have been and gone.

Rangers are currently on the look out for a new permanent manager, but whoever takes the job is unlikely to say no to a player of McTominay’s quality.
