Steve McManaman thinks Jurgen Klopp ‘will be mad’ at Curtis Jones’ defending during Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Brentford, as he told Premier League Productions (25/09/21 at 6:30 pm).

The Bees opened the scoring with a well-worked free-kick, with Jones allowing Canos to run down the line, put in a ball across the face of the goal, which was then tapped home by Ethan Pinnock.

It was Andy Robertson who had to come out charging towards Canos to try and stop his cross, in the end, he couldn’t, as Liverpool then exchanged a number of big blows with the newly-promoted side during their six-goal thriller.

Jones did get on the scoresheet himself when his deflected shot put the Reds 3-2 ahead.

It seems as though it was planned before the ball hit the back of the net, but the 20-year-old was then subbed off seconds later.

Either way, McManaman doesn’t think Jones covered himself in glory with the way he defended Brentford’s opening goal.

“I thought Liverpool were too much laxed in the game,” said McManaman. “Jurgen Klopp will go mad at Curtis Jones for getting caught.

“Fabinho clearing it with his wrong foot. But I thought Brentford had been brilliant. I thought the two strikers have caused Liverpool the most problems this season.”

There were as many blows exchanged at the Brentford Community Stadium then there was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Anthony Joshua lost his world heavyweight title belts to Oleksandr Usyk.

With Manchester City next up for Jurgen Klopp’s side, he will know if they show any of those defensive fragilities against the champions then they will be punished.

Whilst Liverpool dropped points during these early stages of the title race.

Pep Guardiola’s side sent out an early message by securing a 1-0 win at Chelsea and it could have been a lot more if the away side were clinical enough in front of goal.
