Rangers are searching for a new manager – as well as a Director of Football.
Former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish
Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Alex McLeish should return to Rangers – possibly as Director of Football.
Rangers are searching for a new manager after announcing that manager Mark Warburton resigned from his post on Friday evening, bringing his reign at Ibrox to an end after more than 18 months in the job.
Assistant boss David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland also left the club along with Warburton, meaning Rangers face a real overhaul – and Managing Director Stewart Robertson even told the club’s official website that a director of football will also be targeted.
It’s still early days in Rangers search for a new manager, but the main name being mentioned for the job is Alex McLeish, who could be in line for a a return to Ibrox.
McLeish, 58, became Rangers manager back in 2001 as he left Hibernian for a return to his home city of Glasgow, and he won two league titles during four-and-a-half successful years in charge.
With a 66% win rate at Rangers, McLeish went on to secure jobs with Scotland and Birmingham City, but recent spells with Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Genk and Zamalek have failed to bring him any success.

Now, some believe that McLeish will return to Rangers until the end of the season to steady the ship with his former club, giving chairman Dave King time to assess his options.
Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has now had his say, telling the Glasgow Evening Times that he would love to see McLeish return to a club as big as Rangers – but suggested that he has the skills to become their Director of Football if the Gers don’t want him as manager.
“Absolutely,” said McGhee. “A club like Rangers? There are only a few clubs like that in the country. I’m not talking about Scotland. I’m talking about Britain. Rangers have that history. It’s a massive club. So absolutely. I don’t think there are any special considerations, particularly when time has lapsed. People have changed. You have changed and learned more yourself.”
“With Alex and Rangers, I have heard people talk about him as a director of football as well. You look at his experience, his contacts. He is a brilliant networker. He has worked at big clubs, managed big players. I think that for Rangers’ aspirations of getting back towards Celtic, they need that mentality. They do need someone who has that size of ambition, if you like. Alex would be a great asset to Rangers or any club like that,” he added.
