Aberdeen’s Scottish Premiership star Scott McKenna could move to England with Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly interested
Aberdeen fans will hardly be counting down the days until the opening of the January transfer window.
Because The Dons are once again set to endure an anxious couple of weeks with Scott McKenna set to become a gossip column regular. The Scottish Premiership side did brilliantly to hold onto their Scotland international centre-back in the summer but, whether he stays beyond January remains to be seen after all.
The Sun (30 September, page 59) report that Midland rivals Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both sent scouts to watch the £10 million-rated defender this season with a good chance of bids being prepared ahead of the mid-season window.
And, speaking to the Press and Journal, Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has admitted that he expects McKenna to be at the centre of a tug-of-war again very soon.
“I’m hoping we can keep Scott for as long as possible but I am realistic enough to know that somebody of Scott’s ability is always going to be on the radar,” said the former West Brom captain.
“Just about every club in the English Championship and the Premier League have been regular visitors to our games over the last while.”
The fact that Aston Villa need a centre-back is no secret, given that Dean Smith only has James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe to call upon.
Wolves, meanwhile, boast the fourth best defensive record in the Premier League but there is a lack of depth beyond regular back three Connor Coady, Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett.
So McKenna, who captained Scotland on only his fourth international appearance, is surely set to be targeted by the Second City duo.
