Well, it looks pretty unlikely that Scott Brown is going to captain Celtic to a historic 10 Premiership titles in a row.
This season was supposed to result in the Hoops reaching double figures in terms of successive league triumphs but Rangers have taken the script and shredded it.
Steven Gerrard’s side are 21 points clear of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership and although the Bhoys have two games in hand, it’s gone.
No player at Lennoxtown will be more disappointed by the team’s capitulation than Brown who, at 35, is very much in the twilight of his career.
The Celtic skipper, who turns 36 in June, is into the final five months of his contract at Parkhead and there’s been some debate as to whether his performances this season have merited a new one.
But team-mate Callum McGregor has stressed to The Scottish Sun that writing off Brown is a dangerous thing to do by virtue of how often he leaves his detractors with egg on their face, claiming he’s a far better footballer than he’s often given credit for.
McGregor said: “Write him off at your peril, because he’s going to come back. He’s done it a few times now and against Kilmarnock last week, I thought he was the best player on the pitch. He was absolutely outstanding. The thing with Scott is that people underestimate how good a footballer he is and how good his football brain is.
“I just always think he’s going to have value at this club, he’s such a big personality and such a big leader.
“If we are lucky enough to get him for another year then that would be a brilliant decision, but if he decides something else then you have to respect that as well.”
Brown is a huge figure at Celtic and McGregor is spot-on in saying that it isn’t wise to write him off.
That being said, it’s clear that this squad needs freshening up in a huge way and even if Brown does stay another year, it’s time to sign a long-term replacement.
