Lee McCulloch has told BBC Sport that it will be a gamble for Rangers to appoint Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as the new Ibrox manager.

According to BBC Sport, the former Liverpool and England international midfielder is on a shortlist to take over from Graeme Murty at the end of the season.

Murty is in charge of the Gers until the end of the 2018-19 campaign, having replaced Pedro Caixinha as the first-team manager in October 2017.

Former Rangers captain McCulloch, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2007 until 2015, has stated that it would be a gamble for the Gers to appoint Gerrard as the boss.

Steven Gerrard of Liverpool looks on during the International Friendly match between Sydney FC and Liverpool FC at ANZ Stadium on May 24, 2017 in Sydney, Australia.

McCulloch told BBC Sport: “Yes, Gerrard is an under-18s coach, a phenomenally talented player for club and country, and won the Champions League and Uefa Cup. But in management terms, he is very inexperienced. It is a big gamble.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has suggested that appointing Gerrard could see Rangers sign some youngsters from Liverpool.

Merson said on The Debate show on Sky Sports Premier League on Thursday night (10:51pm, April 26, 2018): “The only thing I could see is: one, it would be great because he was a great player, it’s a great job, but will they look at it and think ‘Right, if we can get Steven Gerrard in, we can hit into Liverpool. We will get their young players’. Because their good young players will be good enough for the Scottish game.”

Worth a punt?

Gerrard is now in charge of Liverpool Under-18 side, having been appointed in the role in the summer of 2017.

While it would be a gamble of Rangers to hand the first team managerial role to someone with no prior experience of being in a similar job, it could worth a punt.

After all, Gerrard is one of the greatest players of all time and has worked with some of the best managers, such as Rafael Benitez and current Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, ane he has also been coaching the Liverpool youngsters for a while now.
