Ross McCormack has told Fox Sports that he decided to leave Aston Villa and join Melbourne City in September because he would have continued to be frozen out by Steve Bruce.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a loan at Melbourne until the end of December, who are managed by former Wigan Athletic and Manchester United reserves manager Warren Joyce.

The Scotland international was signed after striker Bruno Farnaroli suffered a serious ankle injury that has kept him sidelined for the entirety of the 2017-18 A-League campaign so far.

In an interview with Fox Sports that was posted on Melbourne’s official website, former Leeds United and Fulham striker McCormack opened up about his decision to leave his family behind in England in an attempt to reignite his career.

“The British transfer window was closed, so it was basically either come over here or stay at Aston Villa,” McCormack said.

“I’m not one to sit around and do nothing. I liked to be involved in squads and playing games and hopefully scoring goals and that all came into the decision.

McCormack, who was brought to Aston Villa by former manager Roberto Di Matteo in the summer of 2016, failed to replicate the kind of goalscoring form in the Midlands that had seen him shine at Fulham and Leeds.

Managing just three goals in 24 league and cup appearances for Bruce’s side, McCormack plunged down the pecking order behind the likes of Jonathan Kodjia, Scott Hogan and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

However, the versatile forward has reignited his goalscoring touch down under, scoring three goals in five games for Joyce’s side including an impressive brace against Adelaide United.

It remains to be seen if Melbourne’s number 44 will extend his loan spell with the club, or look to return to Villa Park as a rejuvenated striker.
