Rangers face bitter rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has told BT Sport that Graeme Murty’s future in the dugout at Ibrox will not be determined by the result of Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Celtic.

The Gers face Celtic at Hampden Park in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, as Murty prepares his side for one last attempt at trying to prevent the Hoops from securing a second successive treble under Brendan Rodgers.

Some pundits have claimed that if Murty fails to knock Celtic out of the semi-final on Sunday, then he will lose his job at Ibrox. But McCoist does not agree and reckons chairman Dave King will have Murty in the running.

McCoist, who played for and managed the Scottish giants, described the situation as “totally wrong” if Murty’s long-term hopes for the job were to be based on Sunday’s result.

“I don’t think the chairman Dave King will be saying he has to win the game or he’s not getting the job,” said McCoist. “I think you have to take a step back and weigh everything up. Has there been an improvement in the team and the squad, a better level of player and more consistency? Yes.

“So there’s a lot of pluses – but the question is: Has the improvement been enough for the board for Graeme to get the job? Or do they believe someone else could come in and make a quicker improvement?

“This weekend is a must-win game as all Rangers games are – but I would say it is totally wrong to say this is Graeme’s last chance of getting the job.”

Rangers have returned to second in the Scottish Premiership table after a 4-0 win over Dundee, while Aberdeen lost to Hearts at Tynecastle.

A win for Murty on Sunday will strengthen his prospects of getting the job on a full-time basis no end, as he aims to become the first Rangers manager to beat Celtic since the Gers returned to the top flight of Scottish football.
