Derby County manager Steve McClaren has said that he wants to give fans a team they can be proud of this campaign, as reported by Derby Telegraph.

When Derby re-hired McClaren it sent shockwaves throughout the media. Nobody could quite believe that the man who was sacked from the job less than two years ago had now returned, especially considering what happened during his spell in charge of Newcastle United.

Regardless, the 55-year-old is back at the helm at the iPro Stadium and is preparing to start off his second tenure at the club this weekend.

McClaren said, via the Derby Telegraph: “Derby County has signed some damn good players and the potential is there. Now we have to work together and produce a team the supporters once again can be proud of.

“We said that three years ago and that is our first goal now.”

“There are good players, I like what I have seen but we are fifth bottom at the present moment. You are generally where you deserve to be after 10 games and that is where we are, so there is something wrong with the talent that is there.

“We have got to quickly find out what that is, quickly put it right and get 11 players on the park who will play the way we want.”

The message brings a sense of deja vu for Derby fans, who heard the same kind of thing when the Englishman was first appointed back in 2013, which eventually led to them reaching the play-off final that season.

There will be many who hate the appointment and others who are willing to give him a second chance, but either way it seems likely that McClaren will put everything he has into the job considering how poorly his last few positions have gone.

The club’s focus will now switch to the league as the rebuilding task starts with a tough home game against Leeds United.
