QPR had 13 shots at Derby’s goal with only three on target as the sides drew 1-1
Queens Park Rangers boss Steve McClaren has called for his players to be more ruthless in front of goal, after the R’s and Derby County played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Loftus Road Saturday.
Jack Marriott put the Rams ahead just after the mid-way point in the first-half, rifling home after a defensive mix-up, but Geoff Cameron levelled the game minutes after the re-start.
Both sides created enough chances to score again, but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing meant the teams shared the spoils. Nahki Wells hit the bar for the hosts, while Massimo Luongo, Toni Leistner and Pawel Wzsolek were all off target.
“We’ve got goals in this team and we’re not scoring them at the present moment. We need to start doing that because then we’ll turn draws into wins and the confidence in the team will go up,” McClaren told Football.London.
QPR travel to Ipswich Town after the international break, and McClaren will want to make sure his goal-shy side are firing on all cylinders for that one. Much has been made about Wells’ lack of goals in particular, but the striker’s influence has been important to the team.
The Burnley loanee was instrumental again on Saturday – despite not scoring – and it’s likely only a matter of time before Wells does start reproducing his Huddersfield Town form at this level. Saturday’s game shows Rangers can create but they must start taking those chances.
