Southampton have signed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from Crystal Palace.
As confirmed by the club’s official website, Southampton have signed Alex McCarthy from Crystal Palace.
Sky Sports say that a fee in the region of £4 million had been agreed by the two clubs as the Saints bring in their third new addition of the summer.
McCarthy had only been at Palace for 12 months, joining the club from Queens Park Rangers after spending the first seven years of his professional career at Championship side Reading.
The former England U21 international has largely spent the past two seasons playing as back-up, and in Palace colours he only managed seven Premier League appearances.
The Eagles were seemingly happy to let him go this summer, and Southampton have opted to bring him in as they seek a reliable back-up for regular number one Fraser Forster.
Taking to social networking site Twitter, McCarthy has shared his feelings on the move.
The Saints have lost the likes of Sadio Mane, Victor Wanyama and Graziano Pelle this summer and may felt Forster could also leave to potentially join up with former boss Ronald Koeman at Everton.
However, it looks like the England international will remain on the south coast, and now he will have McCarthy pushing him for a first-team spot with the 26-year-old more than capable of stepping up to the plate.
