Callum Connolly is currently on loan from Everton at Championship side Ipswich Town.
Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has told the Green ‘Un that he has not held talks with Everton over the permanent signing of impressive loanee – but did not rule out doing so in the future.
The 20-year-old star has impressed since joining the Tractor Boys on a season-long loan, and has been converted by McCarthy from a centre-back into a central midfielder. The move has seen Connolly blossom.
The eight-time England Under-20 international has scored three goals in his last four games, scoring against Reading, Derby and Nottingham Forest for the Suffolk-based club.
Experienced manager McCarthy told media that he will not be looking to enter talks with Everton over a permanent deal for Connolly as it could ruin the club’s chances of signing him, if are truly intent on grabbing his signature.
“There’s no point,” McCarthy said, when asked if he had been in contact with Everton. “I don’t go asking stupid questions because when people ask me stupid questions I give them a stupid answer.
“All they’ll say is ‘let it run it’s course and we’ll see how he does, if we think he can be a player for us we’ll bring him back, if we don’t we’ll tell you how much he’s going to cost’.
“The reality is that he’s here and he’s playing. Sometimes (asking if he can buy) can just muddy the water. Let’s just let him play, let him do what he’s doing.”
Connolly has been a regular in the Ipswich side since late October, appearing in McCarthy’s last nine starting line-ups.
The versatile ace has 18 months remaining on his contract at Goodison Park, and could be available for transfer at the end of the season if he fails to sign a new deal with Everton beforehand.
