Frank McAvennie has claimed that Leigh Griffiths will be available for selection in Celtic’s first game of the season.
Griffiths is in hot water with Celtic boss Neil Lennon, who slammed him in midweek.
Lennon didn’t bring the 29-year-old on the pre-season tour of France because he returned to training ‘overweight’ and unfit.
There’s only 14 days until the Hoops kick off the defence of their Premiership title when Hamilton visit Parkhead on August 2.
But McAvennie has told The Scottish Sun that he believes Griffiths will be back.
He said: “Leigh Griffiths will be fit and ready for the start of the season — make no mistake about that.
“His boss Neil Lennon didn’t miss when he slaughtered him the other night but I’m sure he’ll be ready when the serious stuff starts.”
This is a pretty bold claim by the Celtic legend, it has to be said.
Physically, it seems like Griffiths is nowhere near being fit enough for Lennon’s standards, but then there’s the question of whether the Northern Irishman brings him back immediately when he is fit.
The Bhoys manager was genuinely seething over having to leave a goalscorer of Griffiths’s talents behind and even when he is up to speed conditioning-wise, there’s no guarantee Lennon will forgive him straight away.
