Juventus defender Daniele Rugani continues to be linked with Arsenal but Tottenham should be in the running to sign an ideal Toby Alderweireld replacement.

Tottenham will surely need a new defender this summer, so it’s a little puzzling that they’re not showing an interest in rumoured Arsenal target Daniele Rugani.

A talented 23-year-old struggling to get into the Juventus team on a regular basis, Rugani could be ideal for Spurs’ needs as they face doubts over keeping hold of Toby Alderweireld.

The Daily Mirror have linked the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United with the rock-solid Belgian, who looks to be in Mauricio Pochettino’s bad books right now as he fails to work his way back into the Tottenham squad.

Pochettino may feel that in Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez, plus Eric Dier as an option to fill in at the back as well, he has all he needs in terms of depth in central defence for next season.

However, given they’ve once again failed to sustain a genuine Premier League title challenge or make real progress in the Champions League, it seems clear they need to push the boat out a little more and ensure they have the depth to rotate and cope with both the increased number and intensity of matches they face these days.

Transfermarketweb report that Arsenal are preparing to come back in for Rugani after showing an interest in the past, and Spurs could kill two birds with one stone if they could pip their north London neighbours to a deal.

If the Italy international is available for a reasonable price, Tottenham simply have to add this quality young player to their squad and simultaneously ensure he doesn’t go and give Arsenal precisely the kind of upgrade they need at the back that would surely make them more of a threat to Spurs’ top four hopes next season.
