Craig Burley has backed Newcastle United to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City during the summer transfer window.

The Scotland international thinks Eddie Howe’s Newcastle should be looking to improve their midfield in the summer.

If they can’t get West Ham United captain Declan Rice, then Kalvin Phillips, who has ‘hardly played’ for Pep Guardiola this season, should be a target, according to the former Chelsea man.

The England international left his boyhood club of Leeds in the summer and secured a £42 million transfer(Sky Sports) to the Premier League champions.

But injuries, and the fact that he has someone called Rodri playing in front him, have resulted in the 27-year-old only playing 102 minutes of Premier League football.

For Craig Burley, that’s another reason for the Magpies to want to sign Phillips, as he told ESPN.

On who Newcastle should sign: “Maybe a Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, if they are prepared to let him go,” said Burley. “He has hardly played.”

PHILLIPS NEEDS TO LEAVE MAN CITY

The issue with the former Leeds man is that he’s not going to be used in any other role other than defensive midfield

Given that Rodri is perhaps the best in the world in that position and plays every game possible, then, at best, it’s going to be minutes off the bench for the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’.

And if Phillips wants to maintain his England spot, then he has to leave in the summer, or he will just continue to warm the bench and lose his place at Euro 2024.
