Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been speaking about Ralf Rangnick’s comments regarding Luis Diaz over the weekend.
Manchester United’s interim manager remarkably claimed that he wanted the club to sign Diaz ahead of Liverpool in the January transfer window, but, as we all know, the Colombian ended up at Anfield.
Lawrenson reckons that Diaz may well have rejected Manchester United because of the state of the team at Old Trafford right now.

Lawrenson speculated about Diaz’s decisions.
“Didn’t Wenger say at one point he could have had Ronaldo? Everybody could have had Diaz, but Klopp and the way Liverpool play sold it to him, he knew he was going to be made into a better player. Maybe United had looked at him and he sat with his agent and thought ‘Oh, I don’t think I want to play in that team at the moment.’ They want to go to Liverpool or Man City and go to the rest for the dough I suppose,” Lawrenson said.
Wouldn’t blame him
We may never know if Diaz was approached by United in January, but if he did reject them, who could blame him?
Manchester United are in a torrid state at the moment, while Liverpool are still battling for a quadruple, for us it would be an absolute no-brainer as to which club is more appealing.
United are in absolute crisis mode, and with no guarantees as to what the future holds at Old Trafford, joining the Red Devils is a risk at the moment, even for a player as talented as Diaz.
Diaz may or may not have had discussions with United in January, but it’s hard to blame him if he decided to turn down a move to Manchester after analysing his options.
