Speaking to Sky Sports, David Moyes has been discussing Mikel Arteta’s rise to the top of football management.

Arteta and his Arsenal team are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, and many are still adjusting to seeing the Spaniard in the dugout.

Indeed, many still remember Arteta moreso as a player, and one man who knew Arteta well during his playing days was Moyes.

The Scot, of course, managed Arteta at Everton, and it seems as though he’s a bit surprised by the Spaniard’s managerial rise, stating that he didn’t quite see this coming.

Moyes didn’t expect this

The West Ham boss was asked if he knew that Arteta would be a top-class manager during his playing career.

“Maybe, maybe. He was a bit sultry as a player, but he was a good football player and he made a huge difference for us,” Moyes said.

“Obviously he had the opportunity to work with Pep and have that experience and work under Arsene Wenger as well, so from that point of view he put himself in a really good position.”

Hard to call

Moyes didn’t see Arteta’s managerial rise coming, but let’s be honest, who did?

Trying to predict who the next world-class manager will be is an almost impossible task. During their playing careers you’d have banked on Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard being top-class coaches, but so far, their managerial stints have failed to deliver in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Arteta didn’t necessarily look like a future manager during his time playing for Everton, but after working under Wenger and Guardiola, the former Toffees midfielder has clearly learnt everything he needs to know to take a team like Arsenal back to glory.
