Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Tottenham’s youth team and some of their transfer plans.

For far too long Tottenham have been ignoring their youth set-up. Yes, Harry Kane came through the academy and is Spurs’ best player, but the likes of Noni Madueke and Marcus Edwards have slipped through the net in recent years.

Gold now says that Spurs are actively looking to recruit new players for their youth team in a drive to improve the development squad, and he says that we may see some of these arrivals in January.

Spurs signing youngsters

Gold spoke about Tottenham’s plan to bring more young talent to north London.

“I know there’s a drive to restock the development squad with some young talent in the next few windows, we may see that in January. They brought in Will Lankshear from Sheffield United, a talented young striker,” Gold said.

Good idea

If Spurs are planning for the long-term, then this is a really good idea.

Signing top young talents before their peak years not only improves your development squad, but it can save, or earn, a lot of money in the long run.

One club that has been brilliant at this in recent years is Leeds United.

The likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville were signed as relatively unknown teenagers for pittance, but now, they’re bona fide first-teamers worth a lot more than what Leeds initially laid out for these players.

Spurs would be wise to follow that model as their youth development system is currently lagging behind a number of their rivals’.
