Journalist Peter Linden has said that RB Salzburg defender Maximilian Wober is eager to sign for Leeds United following a recent call with Jesse Marsch, with the left-back close to moving to Elland Road.
Writing on his personal website, the reporter claimed that the 24-year-old Austrian international is ready to sign for Leeds after a recent conversation with Marsch, with Linden saying: “Just before Christmas, Marsch contacted Wober, who, after a short period of reflection, signalled his willingness to move. He wants to go.”
Fabrizio Romano had recently reported that Leeds were preparing to make an offer totalling at £14m to sign Wober in the January window, with the defender set to become the third Salzburg player Marsch has brought to Yorkshire since being appointed earlier this year.
A versatile defender who can play as both a left-back and a centre-back, Wober has been in very impressive form for Salzburg this season, with the Vienna-born star scoring twice and assisting six goals in all competitions this campaign.
Taking the armband on numerous occasions as well for Salzburg this season in the UEFA Champions League, Wober is exactly the sort of player that Leeds have been crying out for this year, with the Whites having one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League and in desperate need of some defensive stability.
Indeed, Wober might struggle initially with the leap from the Austrian Bundesliga to the Premier League, however, playing under a former manager in Marsch could help the defender quite a lot in the long term, with the defender expected to be thrown right in the deep end if a deal can be made soon for the Austrian.
Leeds will need to sign more than just Wober to solve defensive issues
Leeds’ defensive problems, to put it mildly, are a bit of a mess, with the Whites one of the leakiest teams in the Premier League as Marsch is yet to crack the code to keeping goals out of the net for the Yorkshire side. And whilst Wober is a good star, the Austrian star is far from the solution.
With left-back and centre-back in need of desperate improvements, Wober is a solid addition that will help the current problems at the back for Leeds. Yet Marsch will need more than his former Salzburg player if the American is to fully solve these issues for the Whites.
